How to Navigate Descript Drive (Beginner Guide)

Direct answer: Descript Drive is the first screen you see when you sign in at web.descript.com (or open the desktop app). It is the container for all your projects. Use the left sidebar to move between Home, Recents, Shared with me, favorite folders, and Personal vs General workspaces; use Search, Record, and New project in the header; then open a project when you are ready to edit.

What is Descript Drive?

Your Drive is the home base after login. Think of it as the place that holds every project you have made. Before you worry about the editor, get comfortable finding projects, folders, and recordings here.

How do I know my Descript projects are synced?

At the top of the left sidebar, look for the sync status. A check mark means your projects are synced to Descript’s cloud—changes are uploaded and saved. An up-arrow-with-cloud icon means a upload is still in progress (slow internet or a connection hiccup). Most of the time you want that check mark.

How to navigate Descript Drive (step by step)

1. Confirm you are in the right Drive — Below the sync status, click the Drive name (for example your Descript Mastery or personal Drive). If you have more than one Drive (client work, etc.), switch here. You will also see Upgrade, Settings, and Invite nearby. Invite is for adding editors/seats and is covered elsewhere in the course.
2. Use Home — Home is the main Drive landing view. It includes the “What can I help you with?” box for Underlord (Descript’s AI assistant), popular starting points, and a short list of recent projects.
3. Open Recents — Recents lists projects you opened recently. Sort by clicking column headers (name, duration, workspace, and so on). Switch list view vs thumbnail view with the square icon in the top right—list shows more projects at once; thumbnails show the first frame of each video.
4. Check Shared with me (if it applies) — These are projects others started on their Drives and shared with you. If you are not editing for clients or collaborators, you may rarely use this tab.
5. Create folders and Favorites — Folders organize projects (by year, month, podcast vs YouTube, client, or whatever fits your work). Mark a folder as a favorite so it appears in the left sidebar for quick access.
6. Know Personal vs General workspaces — Under Workspaces you will see Personal and General. Personal is private to you (useful when another seat/editor is on the Drive). General is visible to everyone on that Drive.
7. Skim Tools (do not deep-dive yet) — Brand Studio, Media library, AI Speakers, Layout packs, and Learn Descript sit in the Tools section. Each has its own later lessons in Descript Made Easy.
8. Search by title or spoken words — Use Search projects in the header. Descript stores transcripts, so you can find a project by keywords you said in the video or podcast—even when the title does not match. If you have multiple Drives, a dropdown can limit which Drive you search.
9. Optional: watch AI credits and media minutes — An AI credit balance (and media minutes for uploaded content) can appear in the header when enabled. Turn it on later if you want to monitor usage.
10. Open help and shortcuts — The question-mark menu links to the help center, feature requests, changelog, and contact support. You can also open Search actions and Keyboard shortcuts (for example Space to play/pause; Command/Control shortcuts adjust by Mac vs Windows).
11. Start something new — Record opens camera, screen, audio-only, or Descript Rooms for remote interviews. New project starts a blank video or blank audio project. Underlord starting points let you type a plain-English goal (and choose models you already know, such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini, tuned toward video editing), attach files with the paperclip, or pick prompts like clean up a recording from the prompt library.
12. Practice the action item — Click around your Drive, set up a favorite folder or two, peek at Settings (including appearance: dark, light, system, or Classic), then create your first project when you are ready.

Where do Home, Recents, and Shared with me differ?

Home is the landing view with Underlord and starting points. Recents is the sortable list (or thumbnails) of projects you opened lately. Shared with me is only projects others shared into your account—not your own Drive’s private drafts.

How does Descript Drive search work?

Search is not limited to project titles. Because projects are transcribed, typing a keyword can surface videos where that word was spoken. That helps when you remember what you said but not what you named the file.

Is Drive the same as a Project?
No. Drive holds your projects. A project is the container you open to edit. Drive is where you find, organize, and start projects.

What does the sync check mark mean?
It means your project changes are uploaded and saved in Descript’s cloud. An uploading cloud/arrow means sync is still in progress.

When should I use Personal vs General?
Use Personal for work only you should see when other people have seats on your Drive. Use General for files everyone on that Drive can access.

Do I need Shared with me as a solo beginner?
Often no. It matters when collaborators share projects from their Drives with you.

What should I do after I learn the Drive UI?
Follow the lesson action item: explore your Drive, set favorite folders, glance at Settings, then create your first project.
