Choosing the Right Plan - Descript Pricing: Beginner Guide

When you are new to Descript, start on Free and only upgrade when you hit a real limit—do not buy the biggest plan on day one. Plans and prices change, so always check the live page at descript.com/pricing instead of trusting an old screenshot.

The five levels (names can change)

Descript’s pricing page groups plans into five levels:

1. Free
2. Hobbyist
3. Creator (often marked Most Popular)
4. Business
5. Enterprise Custom

At the top of the pricing page you can toggle Monthly and Annual. In the lesson recording, annual was about 35% cheaper. Monthly is easier to leave if you are still testing.

How to choose (3 steps)

1. Start on Free if you have not already. Learn the editor before you spend.
2. When you hit a real wall—AI credits, export size, or media hours—move to a monthly Hobbyist or Creator plan. Treat it like dating the software, not marrying it.
3. Switch to annual only after you know you will stay.

Creator was enough for years of heavy professional work in this lesson. Most people never need Business.

The limits that actually matter

Use these as your upgrade signals (always confirm the current numbers on the live pricing page):

1. Export — Hobbyist tops out at 1080p. Creator unlocks 4K, watermark-free.
2. Custom layouts — Creator and up.
3. Rooms (remote recording) — hours are capped by plan. Check the live matrix.
4. Seats — “1–3” on Creator does not mean three free editors. Each extra seat is another full per-person subscription.
5. Storage and upload size — higher plans get more cloud storage and a larger file-size cap.

Should I buy Creator on day one?
No. Start Free. Upgrade only when Free blocks something you actually need.

Hobbyist or Creator?
If you need 4K export, watermark-free export, or custom layouts, Creator is the plan the lesson points to. If you only need a bit more room than Free, monthly Hobbyist can be the smaller step—check the live comparison.

When do I go annual?
After you have used a paid monthly plan long enough to know Descript is sticking. Annual saves money; monthly keeps an easy exit.

Do I need Business?
Most beginners and many heavy users do not. The lesson’s take: Creator covered years of professional work.
