Your First 30 Minutes in Descript

In your first 30 minutes with Descript, do not try to finish a polished video. Use the time to create your account, open the app, and confirm your computer and internet can keep up—so the next lesson is about editing, not troubleshooting.

This timed path comes from the Descript Made Easy lesson “Getting Started from Zero.” Treat it like a stopwatch checklist, not a full course.

Your first 30 minutes (minute-by-minute)

Minutes 0–8: Create your account

1. Open a browser and go to descript.com. The homepage design changes often; the address does not.
2. Click Sign up (top right).
3. Choose Continue with Google or sign up with email. With email, Descript typically emails a login code—copy it and paste it into Descript to finish signing in.
4. Pause the clock if needed until the account is created. Do not skip this step.

Minutes 8–15: Open Descript (web or desktop)

1. After signup you should land in Descript. If not, go to web.descript.com.
2. Decide how you will work for today:
   • Browser — ideally Chrome or Chrome-based (many people stay here most of the time).
   • Desktop app — download from descript.com/download if you have a strong computer and prefer an installed app.
3. Browser and desktop look and work almost the same. Descript mostly streams over the internet, so either choice is fine for this first half hour.

Minutes 15–22: Quick computer check

1. Confirm you are on Mac or Windows (Linux does not have a Descript desktop option in the lesson’s guidance).
2. Aim for a machine from about 2020 or newer, with about 16 GB of RAM (or unified memory on Mac).
3. Glance at Descript’s current system requirements in their help docs for your OS (macOS 14+ / Windows 11+ in the docs shown in the lesson). You do not need a high-end workstation—just something that meets the baseline.

Minutes 22–28: Internet speed check

1. Open fast.com and let it measure download speed.
2. Target at least about 20 Mbps; around 50 Mbps feels more comfortable.
3. If you are under 20, note it now. Slow internet will make Descript feel sluggish later—consider a better network, closer router distance, or upgraded gear when you can.

Minutes 28–30: Close the loop

1. You are signed in.
2. You know whether you are using web.descript.com or the desktop app today.
3. You know roughly whether your computer and internet are ready.
4. Stop here. Do not force a complex edit in these last two minutes—save that energy for the next Descript Made Easy lesson.

Is the goal to export a video today?
No. The goal of the first half hour is a working login plus confidence that your setup can stream Descript smoothly.
